What is Body Psychotherapy?
Body psychotherapy recognises that emotional distress, trauma and other psychological states are mirrored in the body, through the postures we adopt, the presence or absence of tension in our muscles and in our breathing patterns.
In a healthy individual, these changes can arise due to the stresses of modern life, but they disappear once the stressful situation passes. However, if the stress persists or is repeated frequently, remnants of these physical disruptions accumulate and over time can lead to chronic physical and emotional pain long after the stressful situation has ceased to exist.
These remnants can manifest as panic attacks, headaches, back pain or digestive problems and can leave us feeling overwhelmed by our emotions and unable to let go of troublesome thoughts that make us increasingly restless, even depressed and we may even start to feel that we are only half alive.
By encouraging awareness rather than avoidance, body psychotherapy supports the softening and letting go of these symptoms, and a move towards psychological well-being.
